Licensed Practical Nurse (Acute Psych) Topeka, KS Duties: This LPN position is located on Unit 2-3C. The Licensed Practical Nurse works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The incumbent needs to have a strong working knowledge of psychiatric conditions, appropriate intervention skills, and the ability to be self-directed and self-motivated. Responsibilities include preparing and dispensing medications, administering injections, health teaching, recognition of changes in moods and behaviors of patient and intervening effectively to assist patients in coping, providing assistance with activities of daily living, recording of vital signs, diabetic care, treatments, leading patient activities, patient care, and other duties as assigned. Written assignments are given by the team leader or charge nurse. The incumbent recognizes the need for and seeks guidance when necessary to insure quality patient care. Education : Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Licensure : Full, active and current licensure as a graduate licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. GS-5: Individuals at this grade level are expected to have a broad working knowledge of practical nursing procedures. However, completion of more complex practices or procedures may be subject to closer higher-level review. In addition, the following criteria must be met: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for an d to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures, in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest. Recognize and appropriately respond to breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, promptly reporting to appropriate personnel or corrective action. GS-6 : Requires at least 1 year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent and fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN. In addition, the following criteria must be met: Technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient population. Knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions. Ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs of care, including medication, equipment-assisted care and patient/family education. Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) and performs treatments according to established policies/procedures.
